When it gets right down to it, the Ohio Players' albums were as memorable for their risqué covers as they were for their music. Sure, there were some seriously funky individual tracks, but the Players couldn't keep the momentum up throughout the course of an entire album. And that's why Gold is such a useful collection, even in light of more comprehensive latter-day collections.

Ohio Players Mercury Mercury (label) Soul (CD, LP) A well-titled set – as it's the mid 70s, and the Ohio Players were certainly turning out a lot of gold! Their move to Mercury Records from the smaller indie Westbound was a real winning move – as it gave them a smoother soul feel that only expanded their groove, not restricted it!

Overall, this Robinsongs CD boxed set is an excellent overview of the Ohio Players - three whole discs taken from nearly their entire career, including a couple of tracks from their debut Capitol LP, quite a few from their pioneering Westbound albums, a bunch from the seminal Mercury recordings, and then a smattering from later albums for RCA, Boardwalk, and other labels/5(11).
